Epic Eats And Treats At the Corner House Cafe

We all know that I like a classy establishment where I can dress up and put on my heels, but I am a small town girl at heart, so sometimes I like those down to earth, home cooked flavors in a more rustic ambiance. I have driven by ‘The Corner House Cafe‘ many times and it always caught my eye – I knew I had to stop and check it out at some point.

Finally, long behold I was once again in the area visiting my family, and this time I made it a point to stop in! It had to happen. I am also the type of person that once I get something in my head, I will not be able to get it out of my head until I have tried it or done it. This situation was no different.

It has a charming, warm and inviting feel. There was just something about it. Clearly, otherwise it wouldn’t have been calling out to me for so long.

Upon entering I was pulled right in to the homey ambiance.

Not a bad view.

It’s family run, quaint, busy, and very friendly. Apparently from what I am told, they are always very busy, which doesn’t surprise me, I can absolutely see why.

It’s a great place, with great food.  I was impressed with their little menu.

We were all in need of some grub at this point.

Being Sunday they were only offering breakfast, which really was not a problem for me as a Sunday Breakfast was exactly what I was after.

I was stoked to see that they made smoothies, and the smoothie of the day had loads of green ingredients in it, and for me the greener the better! So I was one happy patron.

I made sure to share it with my nephew, I do believe it’s never to young to prepare for a life of health and vitality.

Train those taste buds as soon as you freaken can!

All in all, it was a pretty awesome experience, and I was finally able to check it off my list(let’s not forget how important that is to me). I will say – if you ever find yourself in the Millarville area and happen to come across ‘The Corner House Cafe‘, pull on over and treat yourself! It was pleasantly surprising, and I will absolutely return to try out their lunch menu.

Keeping it random, local and classy every day of the week.

How To Rock You First Marathon At Orange Theory Fitness

We all love to challenge ourselves, it’s what makes us grow and change into more awesome people. Well, not just the challenge itself – the completion of the challenge! For the month of April at Orange Theory Fitness they had a marathon month. Having always wanted to complete a marathon, I figured this was the best opportunity for me to give it a go. I mean I am already addicted to Orange Theory as it is, so why not utilize that addiction to make another check on the ol’ bucket list.

Seeing as how I am only 10 weeks into my new fitness lifestyle regimen, I was thinking perhaps I should maybe just sign up for the half marathon(somewhere along 13 miles) or if I was feeling eager, possibly the full marathon(somewhere along 26 miles). I was quite unsure, I had no idea if I would be able to make 26 miles. Decisions, decisions…. It’s a hard fitness life sometimes.

If you know me at all, then you know that I have a rubber arm at times. Especially when it comes to a good challenge. Somehow or another I got talked into doing the Ultra Marathon, running at 31 miles(50km). I said yes to it not even knowing if I was going to be able to actually do the darn thing. BUT! One thing I always tell myself is that you never know until you try. You just never freaken know. What’s the worst that could happen? I don’t make it? I could accept that as long as I gave it my best shot.

Ok, ok, who am I kidding. As if I could accept that. No way. That wouldn’t be true Petrena fashion. I took on the challenge, and gosh darn it, I was going to complete it. Just over half way through the month I decided I had better check on my miles and see how far I had to go as the month was flying by…. I was stoked to find out that I was just over 20 miles! Boom! That was an extremely pleasant shocker right there. I was farther then I even expected. I knew right then, I had this. I could for sure do it.

Not to mention, I have the best support network ever at Orange Theory. It’s awesome, and they just keep you going. I was pushing hard my last week and a half, I think I went to 6 classes in a row just to get my miles in. Rest is important, but so is completing my marathon! I wasn’t happy with my heart rate monitor, we were not getting along and it was not registering my heart rate properly.

I pushed through my days with the best coaches ever.

Justin’s energy and coaching passions seems to be becoming stronger every week. Which brings up the whole energy of any group. Can’t ever complain with that.

He is just a lot of fun to be around when your pushing yourself in OT butt kicken sesh. I was trying to run as fast as my legs would take me that day.

Look at his multi-tasking skills.

Which wasn’t as fast as I wanted due to them being a bit tired. ‘Go legs go!!’ In my mind they were running like the wind. My body did good for me though! She still pushed like a little rock star.

Another epic OT sesh in dah books.

Ronnie nearly did me one day at Creekside, gawd she is awesome at making a person push.

Just seeing her walk in my direction makes me push harder. ‘Oh, here she comes, go Petrena! Don’t look like a slacker or she will call you out on it for sure!’

I was dying that day as I had already gone a few days in a row, and it was NOT freaken easy. Nope, not in the slightest, and for the first time she may have almost seen me keel over.

What’s that fitness saying?! – ‘Unless you puke, faint or die, keep going!!‘ Well I was rehearsing that in my head this day. I am thankful for that push of hers every darn time! If if wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have gone as far as I did. As per usual.

I had a bit of sad yet happy workout in Ashley’s class at the Royal Oak location.

It was her last class coaching for awhile as her little OT goer that is growing inside of her is getting ready to come on out. Sad, because she is awesome and I love her coaching, happy because it’s exciting times for her. Tis the way. But I was stoked I made it to her last class!

We have some good work out memories along the way….

After days of kicking my ass trying to get these miles in the bag to nail this Ultra. I took a day off, I needed too, my body needed me to. So after my rest day, I was ready to rock. Ready to complete this challenge that I had worked so hard on all month! And I did just that.

I crossed my marathon finish line in Taryn’s class at Royal Oak. She freaken rock’s too, and I always have a blast in her classes.

Instead of pom poms I had weights.

I pushed as hard as I could, and in the end I finished my Ultra Marathon with an extra mile. Instead of 31, I got 32! Seriously, I was so happy!! Like so ridiculously happy. There is nothing like finishing a challenge. I honestly didn’t think it would effect me as much as it did, but it did, I had a massive feeling of success and accomplishment come over me.

So if you want to rock your first marathon, do it! Sign up, maybe set your bar higher then you even think possible, and then go for it, and keep your eye on the prize!

It makes me want to just challenge myself again with something else. I read an article recently that said 30 day challenges are the best way to do things, so I am going to play with this and see what other 30 day challenges I can get myself into.

Go big or go home right?! Well, I went big, and then I went home! Gosh I love OT, and all the awesomeness it continually brings to my life. Do you love challenges as much as I do?

Nature Inspired Fashion By Jean-Michel

Fashion, art, travel, nature, and scarves, are some of the most cherished things in my life. So clearly I was overjoyed when I had the pleasure of meeting Jean-Michel Gires, whom shares those cherished passions, and has combined them all to create some stunning wearable art in the form of scarves, leggings and fans.

With an absolutely incredible life story of his own, not only was I enamored by that, I felt instantly connected with his creations.

I love the classy packaging!

Originally from France, Jean-Michel graced Calgary with his presence for an executive position in the Oil & Gas industry. After a few years, he decided he felt too tied down, and was craving his freedom once again.

Us travelers love our freedom, what can I say?!

With his extensive travel history, having visited 102 countries to date, and 15 years practicing digital photography under his belt, Jean-Michel has extraordinary photos of natural settings around the globe that he has impressively exhibited over 20 times in various countries such as France, Venezuela, Bolivia and China.

Jean-Michel decided it was time to find a way to share all the beauty he has captured in a capacity that not only just shares it, but brings its beauty to a whole other level. This is where his silk scarves, leggings, and fans came into play.

Initially when he began brainstorming, trying to find avenues where he can pull his passions together and expose his work, he thought perhaps to transfer his photos onto curtains, cushions, and table clothes – however, it was not quite creating that spark inside of him at that moment that he was looking for.

Jean-Michel decided that he wanted to showcase his photography using women as his canvas. What more beautiful canvas could you imagine really? After a year of trial and error, the vision he was looking for finally came into full fruition, and so began ByJeanMichel.

His idea was to enhance women’s natural beauty with a wearable form of art, with vibrant colors, printed on only the best quality materials, and accessible to all. Jean-Michel was not only looking to enhance women’s beauty, but he wanted to see the women wearing his fashion, feeling absolutely stunning inside and out.

His long time fascination with impressionist art is where he gets his inspiration for his photos. He has taken his photos from Canada’s Lake Louise, Javanese Volcanoes, Paris Boulogne France, and the White Dessert in Egypt(just to name a few), and has turned them into dazzling motifs for his apparel.

Not only do I love scarves myself, I love that each and every scarf and motif has a story behind it. They are beautiful to look at, feel beautiful to touch, and look beautiful on. I love that when I am wearing them my fashion piece is telling a story. Leave it to the French to continually create the most amazing fashion. For me and my favorite French designers, there is Chanel, and now ByJeanMichel.

Here I am pictured wearing the Segovia scarf made of silk crinkle. The picture for the striking motif was taken from a creek in the historical town of Segovia, Spain. It’s the eloquent patterns of the trees and leaves that create the motif. I chose this one to begin with for the fact that Spain is my other home, I have spent the better of the last 5 years living in Mallorca, Spain, so it spoke straight to my heart. Not to mention, I absolutely love the colors! Talk about feeling beautiful and chic.

With these times in Calgary being grim in the Oil & Gas industry, Jean-Michel wants to inspire people, and show them that there is life after Oil & Gas.

From corporate world executive to fashion designer, Jean-Michel breaks the barriers, and goes to show that with some ingenuity and passion, anything is possible.

Having only launched in November 2015 here in Calgary, and with many retail opportunities opening up, this is just the beginning for Jean Michel’s brand. I know I will be showing off his pieces every chance I get. Don’t you just love feeling beautiful?

Reap Calgary’s Sustainable Style Revolution Event

Sustainable, local products are the way forward. It’s a way of living that I am passionate about, and I love that Calgary is making it a way of life here. It’s a breath of fresh sustainable air.

I had the pleasure of attending the Sustainable Style YYC, Fashion Revolution event, put on by REAP Calgary. In their words, it is a movement to bring transparency and fairness into the fashion supply chain. It is also a part of Down to Earth Week 2016, which is a festival of local fashion, impact investing, and social innovation. Happening now until the 15th of April.

The event was held at Civic hall downtown.

It was such a great venue! I had never actually been there before, and from the outside I didn’t expect too much, but upon entering, it far surpassed my expectations.

The hall itself is bright, open and has a nice chic feel to it.

It was a great presentation, posing the question ‘Who made my clothes?’.   Which is actually a very good question, how many of us actually know whom made our clothes? It really puts into perspective how mass produced products effect the environment, as well as the local economies. Not to mention the lack of quality in the products that are mass produced.

This was a great opportunity for me to see what Calgary does have to offer in terms of local products. From clothing, all the way to beauty products.

Some of the local businesses that caught my eye and my heart are,

WorldTown Cosmetics – Specializing in established local luxury beauty products, as well as Vegan products! I love that. The lines carried are Bdellium, Concrete Minerals, FitGlow Beauty, Lit, and Velour.

You can go to see Nicky the owner and book for her services of Make-up application, tutorials, touch ups and lashes. She is very knowledgeable with plenty of years of experience, and has freaken awesome hair might I add.

I know where I am going to spending some moola.

Clothing Bar Boutique – One of Calgary’s newest consignment shops, located in Marda Loop. They specialize in being 100% local, also showcasing local talent, and not only being a clothing store, but part of a community, where you can feel at home in.  The owner Katie also has a fundraising event coming up on May 5, at Festival Hall, Inglewood. All proceeds going towards Juno House – specialists in adolescent girls and young women’s mental health. I’ll dress to that!

Neals Yard Remedies – Specializing in ethical organic health & beauty products, the company originating from the UK.  Neals Yard uses only the finest, freshest organic ingredients. If they source ingredients from Africa, they go straight out to Africa to meet the people producing and sourcing their ingredients, and are fully committed to fair trade. They also give all the people they work with in other countries personal bonuses, to do with what they please. That is something that hits home straight in my heart. I am in!

I love samples, and discounts! What women doesn’t?!

Morengo – Aly Mak produces and sells hand harvested, dyed, and crafted yarns, right here in Calgary. There she was spinning away.   Pretty darn cool if you ask me!! Who wants to knit a sweater?!

Making Changes – A walk in closet for women and teens that will provide professional business attire, to those that are facing financial barriers, whom want to join to the workforce, return to school, or engage in volunteer opportunities.   Another one that spoke to my heart. It know how important it is to dress for success, and feel confident going into any venture. I think its truly awesome what Making Changes is doing for women and teens.

These were not the only amazing local companies or organization’s being showcased, these are just a few I mentioned. I found this event truly inspiring. I am so looking forward to becoming more involved with Reap Calgary, shop and support local sustainable living in Calgary, and I am eager to continue my passion of living as locally as possible no matter where in the world I am.

Ran Through Week 7 Of My Orange Theory Fitness Challenge

7 weeks in the Orange Theory books!! This past week I was so busy, like really darn busy, so it was hard for me to focus on everything that was going on with myself. Such is life sometimes. Although, that doesn’t mean I missed any of my 4 workouts. I still nailed them all. They are what make my world go round every week, there is no chance I would miss out on my OT time.

I am so happy that I am in the marathon, it just gives me more reason to push. It’s funny, I remember when I first started this little 8 week journey, I felt like I was getting my ass totally and completely kicked. Pretty much like I got hit by a bus. It was intense. Now though, its the other way around, my body is changing week by week, and its getting fitter and fitter. So now I have to go in there begging myself to kick my own ass! It’s a true story. I want to push my limits. It feels so good! Well, not always at the time….

Since the Marathon is on this month, I am all about getting those miles! Running my little heart out on that OT hamster wheel.

Somehow or another I got roped into signing up for the Ultra?! I think I have to make like 31 miles by the end of the month. Yah, you heard me(well, read me), MILES, not kilometers. Man, sometimes it’s way to easy to convince me to do things.

Fine, fine, once again twist my OT lovin arm. I got this though! I won’t have it any other way. I can’t let myself down, I am too awesome to myself to allow that to happen.

Monday I started off the week in Leanne’s class at Creekside ready to push!

Ummm, which weight to choose?! Decisions, decisions….

Leanne seriously just exudes happy positive energy. It’s awesome.  She had the music pumping, and I was having a dance party in my head – I almost had one on the treadmill, but that would not have ended pretty. Just don’t do it.

I wasn’t totally sure what I was supposed to do for the Marathon other then run. So that is what I did. I thought about asking questions, but Monday fog was clouding over, so I just went with the flow. I was just happy to be there getting those splat points.

Tuesday I was keen to get pushed! Sometimes you need it. Push your limits, go that much further. I can always count on head coach Ronnie for this at the Creekside location.

Tough fitness love, just the way I like it. Do you know how much better you feel when you went that much further and harder then you otherwise would have.

I push myself normally, but much harder in Ronnie’s class.

It helps that she has eyes like a Hawk, and doesn’t miss a darn thing. Although, sometimes that scares me too. ‘Don’t pass out and look like a wimp Petrena!’ I swear I have almost had to peel myself off the floor a couple times. I am pretty sure Ronnie knows I go into her classes asking for it.

Honestly though, I love that. It’s those moments that you get to see what your made off.

Thursday I was back in Royal Oak in Justin’s class.

With everything but my heart rate monitor. Well, I may have also lost my marbles. Can you believe I forgot my heart rate monitor?! Seriously, that is the only thing other then yourself and your water bottle that you need to bring to OT. It’s not something I typically forget. Luckily, they have ones to lend….

Although, I forgot to give it back after and didn’t realize until I got home – I had to go back to return it.

Oh, who am I kidding?! It was just my excuse to go back to OT. I just can’t get enough of it.

Justin was peppy(I been waiting for my opportunity to use that word) and happy, making his rounds in the class, and motivating all the eager little OTer’s. This whole week I have been diggin the beats that the trainers have been playing.

Seeing as how I have not been getting along with my shoe laces the past couple weeks, I pulled out the old double knot! Oh yah baby, who’s coming untied now?! Not my shoe laces, that’s for darn sure. I won’t be having any marathon setbacks!’

I know I said I wanted to come 5 times this week, and that is because, I did want to! So my intentions were to go Saturday and Sunday. However, I injured my foot and couldn’t walk very well on Saturday, so I couldn’t go…. It was a sad day. Let me tell you. I toyed with the idea of going anyway, but also knew better. I didn’t want to make it worse.

If feet weren’t so important! I tell yah…..

I did finish week 7 off on Sunday at Royal Oak in Taryn’s class.   It also just so happened to be my first time joining one of her classes.

Just when you thought I had seen them all.

As if I could ever not like a trainer at OT though.. Once again, she was super awesome! She was also super awesome at helping me get some great material to share with all of you fine folks.

It was an endurance class, which is perfect for me, as it helps chalk up those miles for the Marathon. I think I am up to just shy of 8 miles, which means 23 more to go. This week I best not injure myself and get 5 days in!

Some clips from the week.

I can’t believe I am already going into week 8. I know I have said this before, but I will still say it again. Time freaken flies!! Especially when your using your time doing something you love and in an environment you love. But I always make sure to enjoy every workout. It’s one awesome workout at a time.

It’s you and me week 8! Your both an ending and an awesome beginning. Let’s go!!
